"Loss, Grief & Growth" (LGG) education resource provides educators with information, strategies and suggested readings to support students in dealing with loss and grief. The resource is based on the understanding that loss is a part of life, that grief is a normal and healthy adaptive response to loss, and that the experience of loss can bring inner strength.
Curriculum Services Canada views Loss, Grief & Growth as a useful resource to include in its offerings. CSC's endorsement of LGG signifies their involvement during its development; hence, their seal of quality and can be accessed through their website, Loss, Grief & Growth. The resource has been prepared with respect to current curriculum expectations and outcomes in many subject areas. Dealing with loss due to death is the focus of the resource, however it can be adapted to many types of loss and the significant transitions.
A Brief Synopsis of Loss, Grief & Growth
"Losses and Grieving", a brief introductory portion, discusses loss, grief as a "whole person" response to loss, factors that influence a child's grieving process and how children may be the "experts" at teaching us about their grieving.
"The School Community" highlights the role of the principal and the teachers, and general guidelines for supporting grieving students.
"Supporting Specific Age Groups" outlines strategies for teachers to integrate into their practice when responding to losses within their classrooms. The material is presented in the following grade clusters: JK/SK, Grades 1-3, 4-6, 7-8 and 9-12.
• "Tasks" provide teachers with activities to introduce students to loss, grief and ways to support one another.
• "Teachable Moments" provide response strategies when death and/or or loss occur in the school community, media, curriculum or larger community.
• "Indicators of Need for Additional Support" identify students behaviours which may indicate a need to refer a student for additional supports.
• "Reference and Resources" provide a list of books, websites and resources for teachers, adults, and children about death, loss and grief.

"We are powerless to control the losses and catastrophic events our children may experience, but by honouring their inner wisdom, providing mentorship, and creating safe havens for expression, we can empower them to become more capable, more caring human beings." - Linda Goldman
